Apart from the inherent epistemic nonsense of such philosophical propositions “God exists” / “God does not exist” (as opposed to the more sensible psychological propositions “I believe/disbelieve in the existence of God” which means/says something very different) this whole affair bothers me enormously.
Apparently the campaign cost £140,000.
I think Christians and Secular Humanists, theists, atheists and agnostics could probably all combine and agree that there are much better ways to spend that money rather than engage in childish propaganda.
(The same maxim applies to Christian evangelists).
Now for the contradiction and paradox.
An american atheist (I forget who but apparently he is well known) once said regarding Christian evangelists (particularly those on the street or those among ones family or social circle) that the message of love and eternal bliss is such that irrespective of its truth you would really have to hate your fellow human beings not to want to share it.
Although I find it hard to reconcile the notion of Richard Dawkins being a cuddly and caring man (such has been the effectiveness of the counter-propaganda – or perhaps more pertinently such has been the repulsion felt towards his particular zeal) is not this advertising campaign an attempt to spread happiness and improve the welfare of ones fellow humans?
If so this is a very “nice” or even admirable aim (what would Nietzsche think?)- one may call it a philosophy – a worldview and if you are feeling as cheeky as I am today a religious urge.
