You have foreshadowed B5 with at least two quotes:

"Eventually the Overlords come down to earth and reveal themselves, their reason for seclusion becomes obvious, they have the form and likeness of demonic beings that resemble those from human mythology."

"The basic building block of philosophy must be enquiry. The simple one word questions, who, where, what, how, why?"

It is entirely possible JMS was aware of this sci-fi concepts and borrowed them for his own use (or re-invented them).

With regards the concept of powerful extraterrestrials deliberately fostering hoaxes and confusion I couldnt help myself to a Topical quotation from the Simpsons. From Treehouse of Horror VII (coincidentally on today)

Homer: Oh, no! Aliens, bio-duplication, nude conspiracies... Oh my God! Lyndon
LaRouche was right!

Kodos: What? Are you still here? I'm afraid we'll have to dispose of you... [pushes a button]
[out of somewhere comes a cannon, which reveals a smaller
cannon, which reveals an even smaller one, from which emerges a tube, spraying Homer]

Homer: What are you spraying me with?

Kang: Rum. So no one will believe your story.
